The Manhattan Community Health Foundation is proud to support Matt Ussery as he pursues his career in medical laboratory technology. As a father of three, Matt balances his education with his responsibilities at home, driven by a deep sense of purpose. His journey into healthcare is inspired by the care his family received during his late wife’s battle with cancer. With this scholarship, he is able to continue his education and take the next steps toward a meaningful career. We had the opportunity to learn more about Matt’s path and what this support means to him. Matt’s commitment to giving back is evident in his story and his plans for the future.
What inspired you to pursue a career in medical laboratory technology?
My wife spent seven years fighting cancer, from diagnosis until she passed. During that time, we were in and out of hospitals in Manhattan, Kansas City, and Houston, as well as doctor’s offices here in town. The medical professionals we encountered were all great, and I knew I wanted to give back in some way. Nursing isn’t for me—it’s just not my cup of tea—but I found that medical lab technology is a field where I can contribute in a way that fits me.
How has this scholarship helped you?
This scholarship takes a huge chunk of stress off my plate, and that’s a big deal because I have plenty of other things to worry about. It’s not just about covering tuition—it’s about knowing that I have a solid path forward. I also have a job lined up after I finish my program, which makes the future look even brighter.
What does this opportunity mean to you?
It cannot be overstated how much of a difference this makes. Having this financial support allows me to focus on school and my family without as much stress. I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity and for everyone who has made it possible.
