The Manhattan Community Health Foundation is honored to support Karena Mitchell as she advances in her nursing career. Karena’s path to nursing wasn’t always clear, but once she stepped into the field, she knew she had found her calling. Now working as an LPN, she is continuing her education with the help of this scholarship. We had the opportunity to learn more about her journey and what this support means to her.
Karena’s passion for nursing shines through in her words about her experience and the impact of this scholarship.
What led you to pursue a career in nursing? I spent a lot of time not really sure what I wanted to do after high school. Someone kept pushing me toward nursing, so I got my CNA. At first, I didn’t think I would like it—but I loved it. That was the moment I knew this was the right path for me.
How has this scholarship made a difference for you? The financial aspect of school is one of the biggest challenges. To have that burden lifted and be able to focus on my education is a huge relief. I’ll still be working, but I don’t feel the pressure to spend every night off trying to make ends meet. It’s a weight off my shoulders, and I can’t say thank you enough.
What do you enjoy most about working at the hospital? The older nurses have been so encouraging, welcoming, and helpful. They’re great teachers, and it’s an amazing team environment. That might sound cheesy, but it’s true. I usually work nights, but now that I’m training on both days and nights, I’ve been able to see how great people are on both sides.
What would you say to those who make these scholarships possible? I’m so thankful to everyone who has contributed. It’s so important to have different avenues for people to afford school because there’s so much talent that goes unseen simply due to financial barriers. Programs like the Kansas Promise Act are great, but not every school has opportunities like this. I’d like to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. Please keep helping—it truly makes a difference, and I believe it will continue to pay off in big ways.
