Phyllis Slocombe: The Priceless Value of a Kind Word

26

Phyllis Slocombe has a lifelong commitment to service, dating back to 1958 when she first volunteered at a hospital gift shop. After years spent helping with her family’s farm and caring for elderly relatives, Phyllis brought her dedication to Manhattan, where she has been a consistent volunteer at Via Christi since 2010.

Phyllis currently volunteers in Outpatient Services, but she has served in many areas, including Surgical Services. For her, volunteering is simply “a way to reach out and help people. There are so many people in our world who benefit from a kind word or smile.”

“There are so many people in our world who benefit from a kind word or smile… Volunteering does not cost anything. It is a great way to reach out and help someone.”

— Phyllis Slocombe, Hospital Volunteer since 2010

She knows the profound difference a volunteer can make, recalling how appreciative family members were in the surgical waiting area just to have someone to talk to. In Outpatient Services, her role is often to ensure patients haven’t been forgotten. “It is amazing what a smile, being patient, and a kind word can accomplish,” she reflects.

Phyllis believes the community should know that volunteering is a powerful, cost-free way to help others. “Usually I go home and know that my problems aren’t so bad and knowing that you have done something to help even one person’s day a little bit better.” Her dedication is a testament to the selfless power of giving time.
