Thyra Davis, a retired educator with degrees from K-State, found renewed strength and purpose at our Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center. What started as a journey to recovery transformed into a commitment to serving others.

“I felt needed at that moment. Volunteering is one of the highlights of my week.”

When Thyra first began cardiac rehab, she admits, “The first day I went to rehab, after exercising, I requested a wheelchair to take me to the front door! Exhausted because I wanted to ‘show’ I was strong!” But through consistent effort and the support of the center, she experienced a profound change. “Session after session I became stronger, mentally, more healthy, and when I ‘graduated,’ felt like myself. I still go regularly.”

For Thyra, the center’s services are vital not only for maintaining her heart health but also for the “friendships” that developed, providing ongoing motivation.

Now, Thyra gives back as a dedicated volunteer in the Emergency Department, offering two hours of her time on Wednesdays and Fridays each week. “I believe in serving,” she shares. “At my age, I can ‘pick’ how to use my time and when it is best to give. Volunteering in the hospital is one of the highlights of my week.” Her main objectives are simple yet profound: “to offer comfort and to be compassionate for our patients.”

Thyra vividly recalls moments when her efforts made a difference. One family member in the ED told her, “I can tell you are compassionate; thank you.” Another time, she provided comfort and conversation to a family waiting for a loved one. “I felt needed at that moment,” she says.

Thyra encourages others to consider volunteering, emphasizing that “there are needs in the hospital that volunteers can help serve. Volunteers can personalize which days, how many hours, and what location they would like to serve.” Thyra’s journey exemplifies the power of both receiving and giving back to our community.
